I. Safety Quote"Doing the little things can make a big difference" - Yogi Berra Yogi Berra was well known for funny sayings that sometime made no sense. Some say his 'sayings' were slow witted mistakes, some thing he was a humble genius. We aren't here today to decide ... but today's quote is very applicable to the world of safety and today's talk. II. Safety TalkRecordable Injuries - Why Employees Should Care All injuries need reported. Full stop. No matter how small the injury, it's important they are reported and treated quickly. I get it ... it is annoying to report a little cut on a finger. Whether it's you personally or someone on your team. No one really wants to deal with it. It stops work. It might require someone to say they did something wrong, made a mistake, or just had an accident. It's human nature to not want to address such a small issue ... BUT ... as pointed out in our safety talk this week... Let’s look at a quick example of an employee getting a small cut on his finger. The employee decides not to report the injury and wipes the blood off on his dirty pants to continue on with his work. Three days later, the finger is extremely swollen and infected. The employee is put on antibiotics by the plant doctor. This is a RECORDABLE injury due to the employee receiving medical treatment beyond first aid.
Let’s now pretend that the employee decided to alert his supervisor of the injury immediately and is taken to the same plant doctor. The doctor only needs to wash out the wound and apply a bandage. This is first aid as defined by OSHA, so it is NOT A RECORDABLE injury.
Enough of these small injuries unnecessarily developing into recordable injuries can make the difference in whether a company can bid on a $100 million job or not.
